Yesterday, HGHES was thrilled to welcome Researcher Dr. Ken Lertzman back to Haida Gwaii. Ken was part of the initial HGHES Pilot Program with Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 2009, which led to the creation of Haida Gwaii Semesters in 2010.
As part of the HGHES Speaker Series, the audience at Ḵay Llnagaay Performance house was privileged to be among the first to be publically presented with the groundbreaking findings of Dr. Lertzman and his research team. His talk, entitled “Is Everything Connected? Ecosystem Patterns and Processed from the Forest to the Sea” drew on his expertise as professor at SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management and the Hakai Institute. Specifically, he spoke to the research on ecosystem dynamics that he is leading at the Calvert Island Field Station on the central BC Coast. He drew on past learning from Haida educators in seeking to understand how everything is connected. He also spoke to his interest in how a changing climate drives ecosystems and the landscapes and resources available to people who live in them — and how people respond to those changes.
