INNOVATION LEADERSHIP

New Change Strategies for a Complex World

Launched September 2014

This program invites thoughtful leaders to an outstanding 5-day professional development experience on Haida Gwaii. It will equip attendees with strategic approaches to address complex problems, showcase contemporary perspectives on social innovation, and empower people to lead high impact projects and programs.

Innovation Leadership is designed for mid-career professionals working in the private, public, and community sectors. It includes presentations, small group exercises, stimulating discussion, and opportunities to apply lessons directly to current challenges faced by participants. There is an emphasis on systems thinking, complexity, and innovation, with a particular focus on inter-cultural contexts and relationships. A series of local guest speakers add a unique and compelling element to this program, situating it firmly on Haida Gwaii.

Innovation Leadership is accredited through the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Extended Learning and its content is adapted from the highly successful Graduate Diploma in Social Innovation offered by the Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience.

Ideal participants possess a passion for change, a tolerance for risk, and a desire for action.

  • "The Haida Gwaii Semester provides an amazing opportunity to engage in challenging cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary dialogues. I was left with an in-depth understanding of Haida law, governance, history, and contemporary land management strategies. I continue to apply what I have learned at the Haida Gwaii Semester within the context of my community, the Saulteau First Nations in Treaty 8 territory. Most importantly the semester enabled me to build meaningful relationships with some of the most incredible and inspiring people I have ever met!"

  • “Among many pieces of strong content, the biggest value was the local connections with Haida leaders and community members; their honesty and openness with us - their stories were grounding and let us get a glimpse at what the future might be.”
