HGHES has worked collaboratively with the Loran Scholars Foundation (LSF) to develop impactful summer internships that highlight the challenges and rewards of working in the non-profit sector. We value the energy and commitment of the Loran Scholars to our projects, and we are thankful to the LSF for this opportunity

HGHES Summer Intern 2016

The summer before entering my fourth and final year at the University of Manitoba, where I was completing a B.A in Psychology and Indigenous Studies, I had the privilege of interning at HGHES. Through this internship I had the unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of the inner workings of a predominantly education-focused grassroots organization. Throughout the summer, in partnership with the amazing HGHES staff, I assisted in the development of their policy, recruitment, and fundraising efforts. Living in Haida Gwaii has also enabled me to learn about the distinct heritage of the islands and of Haida the culture. Moving forward in life I will take what I have learned here into my academic aspirations of attending law school.

HGHES Summer Intern 2015

I am studying Ocean Sciences and Biology at Dalhousie University as a 2014 Loran Scholar. As an intern with HGHES I had the opportunity to gain a better scope of the crossroads between education, resource management, and the difficulties facing [communities], and the role that these play together. Academically, I am pursuing interests in environmental conservation through marine policy and my time in Haida Gwaii with HGHES provided an exceptional platform for those professional interests. Additionally, Haida Gwaii itself is beautiful and, personally, I will never forget the breathtaking landscapes.

HGHES Summer Intern 2014

I am a recent graduate of environmental engineering at the University of Guelph and completed my internship during the summer of 2014 as part of the Loran Scholarship Program. My main project was the development of community service learning projects for incoming Haida Gwaii Semester students in partnership with local organizations. During my internship I lived with a host family in Queen Charlotte and had a blast getting to know people in town and exploring the outdoors. Outside of school and work I coach high school wrestling, play music, and love to cook for friends and family.
